Position Overview

Valley Veterinary Emergency & Referral Center in Winchester, VA is hiring a full- time LVT Training  Lead to join our outstanding Emergency team! 

Position Summary:
The Training Lead is a key member of the hospital leadership team, responsible for developing, implementing, and sustaining a comprehensive training program for Licensed Veterinary Technicians (LVTs) and Veterinary Assistants in a fast-paced 24/7 emergency hospital. This role directly supports staff development, operational efficiency, and hospital culture by fostering excellence, collaboration, accountability, and continuous learning. The training Lead ensures that all team members are confident, competent, and equipped to deliver exceptional medical care while upholding the hospital’s standards and core values. 

Key Responsibilities: 

Training & Development 

  • Develop, implement, and maintain a robust training program for new hires, with ongoing education for experienced staff. 

  • Conduct regular bi-weekly check-ins with new team members to assess progress, provide feedback, and create individualized improvement plans. 

  • Collaborate with the LVT Manager to ensure adequate staffing and appropriate placement of trainees. 

  • Recommend staff for scheduling based on readiness and training completion. 

  • Communicate training progress, concerns, and recommendations to the LVT Manager and Hospital Director. 

  • Provide 1:1 training for new LVTs and Veterinary Assistants 

  • Manage multiple trainees simultaneously with support from management and the training team. 

  • Maintain flexible scheduling based on hospital and training needs; adjust personal schedule as necessary to support trainee shifts. 

  • Understand all hospital SOPs, protocols, and procedures involved in training and ensure staff comprehension and compliance. 

  • Assist with onboarding processes as needed. 

  • Support the technician manager with interviewing and hiring. 

  • Participate in creating medical SOPs and training in advanced nursing procedures, including anesthesia. 

  • Assist with continuing education for all technical staff. 

Education Support 

  • Deliver or co-deliver educational presentations as needed. 

  • Participate in 1:1 training session with trainees alongside the training team 

  • Assist in the review of incident reports and help develop corrective training/action plans 

Leadership Responsibilities 

  • Participate in Shift Lead and LVT Manager meetings. 

  • Collaborate with leadership to define training goals and execute plans to achieve them. 

  • Maintain a minimum of 3 CE hours annually in leadership or practice management. 

  • Serve as an advocate for positive change, innovation, and improved workflows across teams. 

  • Uphold and reinforce hospital Core Values, Mission Statement, and Team Agreements. 

  • Contribute to creating a culture that supports clients and referring primary care veterinarians. 

Hospital Culture & Morale 

  • Model positive leadership, using coaching as the primary method for performance improvement. 

  • Provide input for staffing needs, performance assessments, and annual evaluations. 

  • Support treatment room staff through consistent mentorship and guidance. 

  • Promote teamwork, staff satisfaction, and retention of support staff and doctors. 

  • Hold self and others accountable to hospital values and behavioral expectations. 

  • Recognize and celebrate staff achievements and milestones. 

  • Maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive staff information with professionalism. 

Expectations 

  • Take ownership of all job functions and responsibilities. 

  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. 

  • Follow all internal processes, protocols, and role-specific procedures. 

Required Strengths & Skills 

  • 3-5 years' experience as an LVT
  • Strong critical thinking skills, especially under pressure or in emotionally charged situations. 

  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills—verbal and written. 

  • Ability to provide candid, constructive feedback to trainees. 

  • Commitment to personal and professional growth. 

  • High degree of integrity and strong personal values. 

  • Ability to receive and implement constructive feedback. 

  • Current LVT licensure with commitment to ongoing continuing education. 



Schedule:Applicants can expect to work 36-40 hours per week. This is a flexible schedule based on training needs of the staff. Hours will include days, overnights, weekends and holidays as needed.
