Urgent Care Veterinarian Jobs

Urgent care veterinarians treat conditions that need prompt attention but generally fall short of a true life-threatening emergency, such as minor injuries, vomiting or diarrhea, limping, or skin issues that can't wait for a scheduled wellness appointment. Urgent care clinics typically offer extended hours and walk-in availability without the full overnight staffing of a 24-hour emergency hospital next door.

The role sits between general practice and full emergency medicine: urgent care veterinarians need solid triage judgment to recognize when a case needs to be escalated to a true emergency facility, while handling a higher volume of same-day, less-scheduled visits than a typical general practice appointment calendar would involve on a given day.

Urgent care veterinarian jobs exist at dedicated urgent care clinics, extended-hours general practices, and some hospital systems that run a separate urgent care service alongside their regular clinic. Schedules often include evenings and weekends, since the format is built specifically around covering the hours when a client can't easily reach their regular veterinarian.

If you're weighing urgent care against general practice or full emergency medicine, it helps to understand how the pace, triage responsibility, and schedule compare, since urgent care genuinely sits in between the two rather than functioning as a smaller, quieter version of either one.

Before applying, ask about the clinic's relationship with a nearby emergency hospital for cases that need to be escalated, since a clear referral pathway makes the urgent care role considerably easier and safer to manage day to day. This detail often isn't in the job posting itself, so it's worth asking directly during an interview.
