Veterinarian Jobs

Veterinarians diagnose and treat illness and injury in companion animals, livestock, or both, depending on the practice. Day-to-day work includes physical exams, surgery, diagnostics, client communication, and ongoing case management, with the exact mix shifting depending on whether a practice is general, emergency, or specialty focused, and whether it treats small animals, large animals, or a mix of both.

Most veterinarian roles require a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an AVMA-accredited program, plus an active state license wherever the job is located. Many employers also look for DEA registration if the role involves prescribing controlled substances, and some positions call for specific clinical interests or prior experience with certain species, procedures, or case types. New graduates should expect some employers to offer structured mentorship, while others assume more independence from day one.

Veterinarian jobs exist across a wide range of settings: small animal general practice, mixed and large animal practice, emergency and urgent care, specialty referral hospitals, academic and research institutions, and a growing number of remote and telemedicine roles. Compensation structures vary too, from straight salary to production-based pay tied to revenue generated, to a blended model combining a guaranteed base with incentives above a set threshold, so understanding the structure behind any offer matters as much as the headline number.

If you're newly licensed or weighing your first move after veterinary school, it helps to understand what a strong offer actually looks like before accepting one, since base pay is only part of the picture. Associate roles, relief work, emergency medicine, and specialty tracks all lead to genuinely different day-to-day realities, so it's worth being clear on the kind of caseload, schedule, and setting you want before narrowing your search.

Before applying, it also helps to have a clear sense of your own priorities: caseload type, schedule, mentorship, and compensation structure all vary enormously between listings, even within the same city. Taking the time to rank what matters most to you makes it easier to spot the right fit quickly once you start reviewing openings, rather than applying broadly and sorting it out later in the interview process.
