Small Animal Veterinarian Jobs

A small animal veterinarian focuses on companion animal medicine, primarily dogs, cats, and sometimes other household pets like rabbits or birds, rather than livestock or equine patients. This is the most common type of veterinary practice in the US, covering everything from routine wellness visits to surgery, dental care, and the ongoing management of chronic illness in aging pets.

Small animal veterinarian jobs require a standard DVM license and typically don't call for additional certification beyond what any general practice role requires, though individual practices vary considerably in the specific species, caseload mix, and clinical focus they look for in a given candidate.

Small animal veterinarian jobs exist across general practice, emergency and urgent care, and specialty referral settings, since nearly all specialty medicine, from cardiology to oncology to surgery, is practiced on small animal patients in the US. The distinction from "large animal" or "mixed practice" is genuinely about species focus rather than a separate credential, license, or career track.

If you're a new graduate or an experienced DVM specifically seeking companion animal-focused work, filtering listings by small animal practice helps narrow results away from mixed and large animal roles, which involve a genuinely different clinical skill set, equipment, and working environment that doesn't overlap much with typical small animal clinic experience.

Before applying, it's worth reviewing the specific caseload and species mix a practice mentions, since even within small animal medicine, some clinics see mostly dogs and cats while others also treat rabbits, birds, or other household pets regularly, which can shape both your day-to-day work and any additional training you might want to pursue.
