Webinar Description:
Cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition affecting aging dogs and cats, often compared to Alzheimer’s disease in humans. Despite its prevalence, CDS remains underdiagnosed due to overlapping symptoms with other age-related conditions and a general under recognition of behavioral signs.
This webinar will provide veterinary professionals with a comprehensive overview of pathophysiology, clinical presentation, diagnostic approach, and current treatment strategies for CDS. Emphasis will be placed on practical tools for recognizing cognitive decline, client communication strategies, and evidence-based management techniques to enhance the quality of life for both patients and their caregivers.
Webinar Agenda:
- Pathophysiology of Cognitive Dysfunction
Overview of neurologic changes in aging pets and comparison to human neurodegenerative conditions.
- Signs and Differential Diagnosis
Behavioral and physical signs of CDS in dogs and cats; ruling out other age-related conditions.
- Diagnostic Tools and Scoring Systems
Use of behavior questionnaires, cognitive scoring tools, and ancillary diagnostics.
- Management and Therapeutic Strategies
Pharmacologic, dietary, environmental, and behavioral interventions for slowing disease progression and improving quality of life.
- Client Communication and Long-Term Care Planning
Discussing prognosis, caregiver burden, and setting realistic expectations with pet owners.
